5월13일 하원 연설(수상에 취임한 직후)
우리는 역사상 가장 큰 전쟁의 하나에서 초기 단계에 들어와 있습니다. 우리는 노르웨이, 네덜란드 등
여러 곳에서 전투중입니다. 우리는 지중해에서도 각오해야 합니다. 공중전도 계속되고 있습니다. 후방
에서도 준비할 것이 많습니다.
정부에 참여한 사람들에게 말하였듯이 하원에서도 같은 말을 합니다. 나는 피, 수고, 눈물, 그리고 땀밖
에 줄 것이 없습니다. 우리 앞에는 가장 심각한 시련이 기다리고 있습니다. 우리 앞에는 길고 긴 나날들
의 투쟁과 고통이 기다리고 있습니다. 우리의 정책은 뭐냐고 물으실 것입니다. 내가 지금부터 말하겠습
니다. 그것은 전투를 하는 것이라고. 바다에서 육지에서 하늘에서 하나님께서 우리에게 주신 모든 힘과
우리의 모든 권능으로써 싸우는 것 그것이 우리의 정책입니다.
후회스럽고 어두운 인간의 죄악사에서도 유례가 없는 괴물과 같은 폭군을 상대로 전쟁을 계속하는 것,
이것이 우리의 정책입니다. 여러분들은 물으실 것입니다. 우리의 목표는 뭐냐고.
나는 한 마디로 답하겠습니다. 승리, 그 어떤 대가를 지불하더라도 승리, 그 어떤 공포에도 불구하고, 그
길이 얼마나 멀고 험하더라도 승리, 승리하는 것입니다. 승리 없이는 생존이 불가능하기 때문입니다.
We are in the preliminary stage of one of the greatest battles in history.... That we are in action at
many points—in Norway and in Holland—, that we have to be prepared in the
Mediterranean. That the air battle is continuous, and that many preparations have to be made
here at home.
I would say to the House as I said to those who have joined this government: I have nothing to
offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat. We have before us an ordeal of the most grievous kind. We
have before us many, many long months of struggle and of suffering.
You ask, what is our policy? I will say: It is to wage war, by sea, land and air, with all our might
and with all the strength that God can give us; to wage war against a monstrous tyranny, never
surpassed in the dark and lamentable catalogue of human crime. That is our policy. You ask,
what is our aim? I can answer in one word: Victory. Victory at all costs—Victory in spite of
all terror—Victory, however long and hard the road may be, for without victory there is no
survival.

나는 지난 며칠 간 히틀러와 협상을 시작하는 것이 나의 의무중 하나인지를 신중하게 생각해 보았습니
다. 우리가 지금 휴전을 요청하는 것이 우리가 끝까지 싸운 다음에 하는 것보다 더 좋은 조건을 얻을 수
있다고 생각하는 것은 안이합니다. 독일은 우리에게 무장해제, 즉 우리의 해군기지와 더 추가적인 무엇
을 요구할 것입니다. 영국 정부가 모슬리 같은 작자들 아래서 세워지더라도 그것은 히틀러의 꼭두각시
에 지나지 않을 것이고 노예 국가가 될 것입니다. 이런 과정의 종말에 가면 우리는 무엇이 되어 있을까
요? 한편 우리는 거대한 예비 전력과 유리한 점을 갖고 있습니다. 그리고 나는 내가 한 순간이라도 타협
이나 항복을 원한다면 여러분 모두가 궐기하여 나를 이 자리에서 끌어내릴 것이라는 점을 확신하게 되
었습니다. 마침내 이 섬나라의 오랜 역사가 종말을 맞는다면 우리 모두가 흘린 피에 젖어서 땅에 누워
있을 때 그렇게 되도록 합시다!
I have thought carefully in these last days whether it was part of my duty to consider entering into
negotiations with That Man [Hitler]. But it was idle to think that, if we tried to make peace now,
we should get better terms than if we fought it out. The Germans would demand our – that
would be called disarmament – our naval bases, and much else. We should become a
slave state, though a British Government which would be Hitler's puppet would be set up
– under Mosley or some such person. And where should we be at the end of all that? On
the other side we have immense reserves and advantages. And I am convinced that every one of
you would rise up and tear me down from my place if I were for one moment to contemplate
parley or surrender. If this long island story of ours is to end at last, let it end only when each one
of us lies choking in his own blood upon the ground.
*6월4일 하원 연설(決死抗戰)의 의지를 밝힌 연설
우리는 끝까지 갈 것입니다. 우리는 프랑스에서 싸울 것입니다. 우리는 바다와 대양에서 싸울 것입니다.
우리는 강력해지는 힘과 자신감으로 하늘에서 싸울 것입니다. 우리는 무슨 대가를 치르더라도 이 섬을
지켜낼 것입니다. 우리는 해안에서 싸울 것입니다. 우리는 상륙지점에서 싸울 것입니다. 우리는 들판에
서, 거리에서 싸울 것입니다. 우리는 언덕에서 싸울 것입니다. 우리는 절대로 항복하지 않을 것입니다.
그리고 지금은 한 순간도 믿고 싶지 않지만 만약 이 섬의 많은 지역이 점령당하고 굶주리게 된다고 해도
바다 너머에 있는 우리의 제국은 영국 함대의 보호를 받으면서 무장하여 싸움을 계속할 것입니다. 하나
님께서 정하신 시간에 신세계가 가진 모든 힘으로써 구세계를 해방시키고 구출에 나설 때까지 우리는
끝까지 싸울 것입니다.
We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we
shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our island,
whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds,
we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender,
and if, which I do not for a moment believe, this island or a large part of it were subjugated and
starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry
on the struggle, until, in God's good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps
forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old.
*6월16일 하원 연설(프랑스가 독일에 항복을 제안한 시점)
그러나 우리가 실패하면 미국을 포함하여, 그리고 우리가 알고 존중하였던 모든 것을 포함하여 세계 전
체가 새로운 암흑의 시대, 그 심연으로 빠져들 것인데, 왜곡된 과학기술의 빛에 의하여 더욱 음험하고
아마도 더욱 오래 끌게 될 것입니다. 따라서 우리는 우리의 의무를 다하기 위하여 더욱 스스로 다짐합시
다. 그리하여 대영제국과 연방이 천년을 더 이어간다면 (후세의) 사람들이 여전히 “이것이 그들에겐 최
고의 순간이었다”고 말하도록 합시다.
But if we fail, then the whole world, including the United States, including all that we have known
and cared for, will sink into the abyss of a new dark age made more sinister, and perhaps more
protracted, by the lights of perverted science. Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and
so bear ourselves, that if the British Empire and its Commonwealth[note 5] last for a thousand
years, men will still say, 'This was their finest hour.'
