서양사람은 왜 나이를 물으면 싫어할까

미국에 사는 20代 한국 청년에게 물었다.
"미국 사람들은 처음 만났을 때 나이를 물어보면 실례로 받아들인다는데 왜 그렇지?"
대답은 간단하였다.
"나이를 알아도 달라지는 게 없잖아요. 그러니 물을 필요도, 알 필요도 없지요."
한국에서 상대의 나이를 알고싶어하는 건 서열을 매기려는 목적이 상당하다. 나이가 많으면 형이나 선배로 대접하고 존대를 한다. 회식 자리에서도 上席(상석)을 배려한다.
미국에선 나이 기준으로 자리를 배치하지 않는다. 나이가 많다고 존대어를 쓰지 않고 특별 대우를 하지도 않는다. 인간의 가치는 나이 순이 아니라 모두가 同等(동등)하다.
서열의식은 儒敎(유교)문화와 관련 있다. 유교는 인간관계를 중심으로 놓는 종교적 이데올로기이다. 인간관계를 잘 유지하려면 상대의 나이, 결혼與否(여부), 고향, 학교를 알아야 한다.
기독교 문화는 神과 인간 사이의 수직관계를 중시한다. 自我(자아)를 소중하게 여긴다. 그러다 보니 나만의 聖域(성역)이 필요하다. 聖域은 비밀스러워야 한다. 나이, 결혼여부 등은 지켜야 할 비밀이 되는 것이다.
