 가장 위급한 때엔
 

누구의 일생에나 매우 위급한 때가 한 두 번은 있게 마련입니다. 나의 80년의 인생을 돌이켜 보면 가장 위급한 때가 한번 있었습니다. 6.25가 터지던 그 날 새벽부터 38선 근처에서 대표 쏘는 굉음이 들려오기 시작했습니다. 이튿날 월요일에는 서울 상공에 인민군의 미그 전투기가 요란하게 날아갔습니다.

나는 그 때 연희대학교의, 요새 말로 하자면, 총학생회장이어서 학교를 지킨다고 목총을 들고 학생회 간부들과 학교에서 밤을 새웠습니다. 화요일에는 국군 패잔병들이 부상자들과 함께 힘없는 발걸음으로 교정을 지나 남쪽으로 사라져갔습니다. 수요일 새벽에는 한강 쪽에서 엄청난 폭음이 들렸고, 뒤에 알게 된 사실이지만, 인민군의 남진을 차단하기 위하여 한강 철교가 폭파된 것이었습니다.

그날 오후 박상래 교수가 우리를 찾아와, “인민군이 이미 서울에 들어왔다니, 군들은 2~3일 서울을 피해 남쪽에 가 있다가 돌아오면 어떤가” 그러면서 여비가 든 봉투를 나에게 건네주었습니다.

매우 위급한 그 때였습니다. 생각을 더 해볼 여유가 없었습니다. 우리가 서강에서 작은 쪽배를 얻어 타고, 걷고 또 걸어서 안양으로 수원으로 강행군을 하며 고달픈 피난길을 더듬고 더듬어 부산 해운대까지 갔습니다.

삼각산 기도원에서 기도하던 친구들도 기도를 중단하고 피난길에 올랐고, 국무회의를 주장하던 이승만 대통령과 각료들도 피난길에 올랐고, 시인도 성악가도 목사도 신부도 수녀도 기업인도 공직자도 다 도망을 가야만 했습니다. 그 때가 가장 위급한 때였습니다. “귀 있는 자여, 들으라”
