 李대통령세번 도전 성공한 나라 우리뿐
 평창동계올림픽 유치 위해 올림픽외교 주력한 결과 꿈 이뤘다 평가

이명박 대통령은 8일 10여년만에 이뤄진 평창 동계올림픽 유치와 관련, "삼세번 도전해 성공한 나라는 우리 뿐"이라고 말했다. 

이 대통령은 이날 콩고민주공화국의 수도 킨샤샤의 한 호텔에서 가진 간담회에서 "한번 도전해 포기했다가 10, 20년 지나 도전한 경우는 있었다. 세계가 한국사람은 끈질기다고 한다"며 이같이 밝혔다. 

이 대통령은 또한 "세계가 우리를 아주 높은 수준으로 인정하고 있고 우리는 그 수준에 맞춰나가는 게 더 급하다"며 "아무리 돈을 많이 벌고 나라가 GDP 2만∼3만달러가 되더라도 국민 의식이 공정.법치를 다 갖춰야 국제사회의 존경을 받을 수 있다"고 강조했다. 

그러면서 "우리 사회가 내적변화를 가져오지 않으면 저 나라는 열심히 돈만 벌고 책임을 다하지 않는다고 한다"며 "작년에 우리가 원조를 주는 나라가 됐다. 도움이 필요한 나라에 도움을 주는 국제적 책임을 다하려고 한다"고 말했다.

한편, 이 대통령은 지난 3일 남아공 더반에 도착한 이후 5일 동안 매일 10여명 이상의 IOC 위원들을 만나 평창 유치의 당위성을 설명하는 등 '올림픽 외교'에 주력했다. 이로 인해 평창이 확정된 직후 정치권에서는 "러시아 푸틴총리보다 빛나는 외교력이었다"는 평가가 이어졌다.
