 샤프 한미 군사훈련할 권리 있다

"몇년 안에 北 추가 도발 가능성"

  월터 샤프 주한미군사령관은 "모든 국가는 적대세력에 대응해 군사훈련을 할 수 있는 권리가 있다"며 "미국과 한국은 매년 이런 형태의 훈련을 하고 있다"고 말했다.

샤프 사령관은 9일 웨스틴조선호텔에서 열린 동아시아연구원 주최 오찬 강연에서 이같이 말하고 서해 한미 연합훈련에 대해서 과거에도 실시하던 통상적인 훈련으로 중국이 반대하더라도 실시할 방침임을 강하게 시사했다.

샤프 사령관은 또 "북한이 보유한 비대칭 전력은 한국과 미국 뿐만 아니라 동아시아 지역에 큰 위협으로 이에 대비해야 한다"고 말했다.

그는 "북한의 김정일은 2012년 강성대국을 목표로 하고 있고 그 이후에도 도발이 있을 수 있다"며 "지역국가들은 북한이 천안함 공격과 같은 행동을 못하도록 압력을 행사해야 한다"고 강조했다.

그는 북한이 과거와는 다른 방식으로 공격하고 있는 점에 주목하면서 모든 위협에 대비해 싸워 이길 준비를 하는 것이 최우선 과제라고 강조했다.

그는 "앞으로 몇년간 한미 동맹은 더욱 강화되고 위협에 대한 대비 능력도 강력해질 것"이라며 "한미 정상이 합의한 전시작전권 이양 연기는 서울에서 열리는 '2+2 회담'에서 세부적인 논의가 이루어질 예정"이라고 소개했다.

샤프 사령관은 "천안함 사건 이후 한국과 미국, 영국, 스웨덴, 캐나다 등 5개국이 참여한 조사에서 객관적이고 과학적인 방법으로 북한의 소행임을 입증했다"며 "국제사회도 이에 동조하고 있다"고 말했다.(konas)
