펜스 트럼프 대통령 웜비어 기억하며 싱가포르행…시간낭비 않을 것

마이크 펜스 부통령은 트럼프 대통령이 미-북 정상회담에서 시간을 낭비하지 않고 과거의 실수도 반복
하지 않을 것이라고 밝혔습니다. 또 트럼프 대통령이 북한에 억류됐다 풀려난 뒤 사망한 미국 대학생
오토 웜비어 가족을 기억하며 회담에 임할 것이라고 전했습니다. 백성원 기자가 보도합니다.
북한이 비핵화에 진지하지 않다면 미국은 북한과 미국의 시간을 낭비하지 않을 것이라고 마이크 펜스
부통령이 밝혔습니다.
[녹취: 펜스 부통령] “And if they’re not we won’t waste their time or ours. We will not repeat the
mistakes of the past.
펜스 부통령은 9일 ‘신앙과 자유 연맹’이 워싱턴에서 개최한 행사에 참석해 전 세계의 눈이 역사적인
미-북 정상회담에 참석하는 트럼프 대통령에 쏠려있다면서, 미국은 과거의 실수를 반복하지 않을 것이
라고 말했습니다. 트럼프 대통령은 정신을 바짝 차리고 정상회담에 임할 것이고, 대통령이 말한 대로
북한이 진지한지, 그렇지 않은지 1분이면 알게 될 것이라는 설명입니다.
[녹취: 펜스 부통령] “But rest assured our President is going into this summit with his eyes wide
open. And as he said earlier today, he’ll know in the first minute if they’re serious and if they’re
not.
또 트럼프 대통령이 자신감을 갖고 정상회담에 접근하고 있다며, 대통령은 이를 평생 준비해왔다고
강조했습니다.
[녹취: 펜스 부통령] “As President said this week, he approaches this summit with confidence.
The truth is he has been preparing for this his whole life.”
펜스 부통령은 실패한 정책과 약속 위반을 수년 간 겪은 끝에 트럼프 대통령은 전략적 인내로 알려진
실패한 정책을 끝내고 강력한 태도를 취했다고 말했습니다. 그러면서 이는 동맹과 함께 북한 정권에 전
례 없는 경제적, 외교적 압박을 가하기 위한 목적이었다고 설명했습니다.
이어 수개월 간 미국의 지도력과 강력한 언행이 변함없이 이어지자 상황이 달라지기 시작했다고 지적
했습니다. 북한이 (평창) 올림픽에 참가하고, 한국과 신기원을 이룬 정상회담을 열었으며, 핵과 미사일
실험을 중단했다는 겁니다.
[녹취: 펜스 부통령] “And after month months of steadfast American leadership, strong words
and actions, things began to change. North Korea participated in the Olympics, and held a
groundbreaking summit with South Korea. North Korea suspended all nuclear and ballistic missile
testing and with no concessions from the United States, North Korea released three American
hostages who arrived home just a few weeks ago.
게다가 미국이 어떤 양보도 하지 않았는데 북한은 3명의 미국인 인질을 석방했고 그들은 바로 몇 주일
전 집으로 돌아올 수 있었다고 덧붙였습니다. 펜스 부통령은 역사적인 평화 추구의 길에 나서는 트럼프
대통령이 북한에서 억류됐다 풀려난 뒤 숨진 미국 대학생 오토 웜비어 씨의 가족을 가슴에 담고 간다고
말했습니다.
[녹취: 펜스 부통령] “As President Trump embarks on this history quest for peace, I can assure
that he also goes with the family of Otto Warmbier on his heart.”
펜스 부통령은 이날 웜비어의 아버지와 전화 통화를 나눴다며, 웜비어가 명석하고 아름다운 훌륭한
젊은이였다는 트럼프 대통령의 최근 발언을 전했다고 밝혔습니다. 아울러 트럼프 대통령이 말한 대로
사랑하는 아들의 죽음이 헛되지 않을 것이라는 점을 웜비어 아버지에게 분명히 했다고 강조했습니다.
