백악관 “트럼프 김정은에 대한 평가 바뀌지 않아…언행 일치될 때까지 압박 지속”

백악관은 김정은 국무위원장은 훌륭하다는 도널드 트럼프 대통령의 발언은 김정은에 대한 평가가 바뀌
었다는 뜻이 아니라고 밝혔습니다. 북한의 언행이 일치될 때까지 최대 압박 캠페인은 계속될 것이라는
점도 거듭 강조했습니다. 김영남 기자가 보도합니다.
백악관은 김정은에 대한 트럼프 대통령의 평가에는 변화가 없다고 밝혔습니다.
[녹취: 샌더스 대변인] “Certainly not that but he is … wants to have the ability to sit down and
have these conversations. And in that process, they have been open with their willingness to
denuclearize and that has certainly been the focus and what we have been pushing for and
expect to happen.”
새라 샌더스 대변인은 25일 정례브리핑에서 “김정은은 매우 열려 있고 매우 훌륭하게 해오고 있다”는
트럼프 대통령의 발언과 관련해, 과거 국정 연설에서 독재자로 칭했던 것과 비교해 평가가 바뀐 것이냐
는 질문에 확실히 아니라며 대통령은 김정은과 마주 앉아 대화를 하고 싶어하는 것이라고 답했습니다.
이런 과정 속에서 북한은 비핵화에 대한 의지를 공개적으로 밝혀왔으며 이 점에 초점을 두고 있다는
겁니다. 또한 이야말로 미국이 추구해왔고 이뤄지길 기대하는 바라고 설명했습니다.
샌더스 대변인은 또 대통령의 최근 발언은 미북 정상회담을 갖는 것과 북한의 한반도 비핵화 의지와
관련해 최근 한 달 동안 미국이 가져온 대화들을 언급한 것이라고 설명했습니다.
[녹취: 샌더스 대변인] “President’s referencing the conversations that we have had ongoing over
the last month or so in regards to meeting to take a place and their willingness to denuclearize on
the peninsula.”
이어 트럼프 대통령은 북한 정권이 바뀌고 있다고 생각하느냐는 질문에, 미국은 대북 최대 압박 캠페
인이 작동한다고 생각한다고 답했습니다.
[녹취: 샌더스 대변인] “We think that the maximum pressure campaign is working, but again we
are not going to let up on that campaign until we see some of the words that they have made to
go into concrete actions, but they are moving in the right direction.”
이어 미국은 북한의 발언들이 구체적인 행동으로 실행되는 것을 볼 때까지 최대 압박 캠페인을 완화
하
지 않을 것이라면서도 북한이 올바른 길로 나아가고 있다고 설명했습니다.
한편 트럼프 대통령은 전날 에마뉘엘 마크롱 프랑스 대통령과 정상회담에 앞서 기자들과 만나 북한과
매우 좋은 논의를 갖고 있다며 현재 보여지는 모든 것으로 미뤄 김정은은 매우 열려 있고 훌륭하게 해
오
고 있다고 말했습니다. 또한 북한과 매우 개방적이고 훌륭한 방식으로 협상할 수 있기를 바란다며 공정
하거나 합리적이지 않고 좋지 않다면 과거 행정부들과는 달리 자신은 회담 테이블을 떠날 것이라고 강
조했습니다.
