 정치를 하더라도 惡意를 품지 않고 상대를 비판한다

 2012년 미국 대통령 선거일을 18일 남겨놓고 천주교 자선 단체인 알프레드 E.스미스 추모 만찬 모임이 주최한 후보 초청 만찬이 있었다. 민주당 후보 오바마 대통령과 공화당 후보 롬니 지사는 간단한 연설을 하였는데 우스개가 많았다. 누가 더 멋지게 만찬 참석자들을 웃기느냐의 경쟁 같았다. 물론 言中有骨(언중유골)의 조크로 상대를 공격하는 장면도 있었으나 始終(시종) 여유 있고, 정정당당한 대결이었다. 후진국에선 선거에서 지는 게 敗家亡身(패가망신)을 의미한다. 선진국은 선거가 좋은 스포츠처럼 멋진 구경꺼리가 될 수 있다. 롬니가 이런 말로 미국 정치의 美學을 이야기하였다.
  
    
  상대 후보를 비판하더라도 惡意를 품지 않으려면 인격 수양과 함께 이념적 동질성이 필요하다. 대한민국 헌법을 존중하는 사람끼리만 상호 존중이 가능하기 때문이다.
