美 눈폭풍에 최소 6명 이상 숨져
60만가구 전기 공급 중단

[뉴스파인더 홍범호 기자] 미국 동북부 지역에 눈폭풍으로 9일(현지시간) 현재 70㎝가 넘는 폭설이 쏟아져 최소 6명이 사망하고 60만 가구에 전기 공급이 중단됐다.
눈이 많이 내린 지역의 교통 통제는 이어지고 있으며, 항공기 5천 편이 결항했고, 자동차 19대가 연쇄 충돌하는 등 폭설에 따른 사고가 잇따랐다.
미국 동북부의 뉴욕, 코네티컷, 매사추세츠, 로드아일랜드, 메인 주 등이 눈폭풍에 대비해 비상사태를 선포하고 대비했지만, 피해는 적지 않았다.
중부 코네티컷에는 이날 오전까지 71㎝(28인치) 이상의 폭설이 쏟아졌고, 매사추세츠 동남부와 로드아일랜드, 뉴햄프셔 등은 60㎝(2피트) 이상의 눈이 내렸지만 아직 그치지 않고 있다. 뉴욕 롱아일랜드에도 60㎝ 이상의 눈이 내렸다.
눈발이 약해지거나 눈이 그친 지역도 있지만, 높은 파도가 접근하고 있어 해안가 저지대에는 홍수피해가 우려된다.
미국 기상청은 메인, 매사추세츠 등 뉴잉글랜드 지역의 눈폭풍 규모가 역대 세 번째 안에 들어갈 것으로 보인다고 밝혔다.
