'요람에서 무덤까지' 보편적 복지를 추구하면서 하향평준화는 가속화됐습니다. 담세율은 35%까지 치솟았지만 국민들의 생활수준은 추락했습니다. 탄광노조가 영국 정치를 좌우할 정도로 노조의 힘이 셌습니다. 이런 영국을 '개혁'한 이가 마거릿 대처입니다. 그녀는 영국을 구하고 서구를 구했습니다. 탄광노조를 와해시켰고 주요산업을 민영화했습니다. 불필요한 보편적 복지는 축소했습니다. 담세율도 25%로 떨어졌지요. 포클런드 전쟁도 승리로 이끌었습니다. 
나는 대처 여사 같은 지도자를 기다립니다. 북핵 문제가 다시 대두된 지난 며칠 동안 우리 언론과 정치인들 지식인들이 하는 말을 들으면서 지금 이 나라에 진정 필요한 것은 마거릿 대처 같은 강인한 지도자의 등장인 것을 다시 깨닫습니다.
