 니체는 '진리는 없다'고 했습니다. 우리가 이떤 '진리'에 구속될 때 우리는 '편견'에 사로잡힐 수 있습니다. 논증된 과학적 사실 외에 '완전한 진리'은 없습니다. '빛은 직진한다'는 '진리'조차 아인슈타인의 일반상대성이론으로 무너졌지요. 하물며 정치적 진리가 있을 수 없습니다. 나는 '2032' 1월호의 '발행인 편지'에서 '모두가 동의하는 정치적 진리가 없음'을 썼습니다. 사람들은 재화의 분배부터 공동체에 대한 의무까지 다 나름대로 '원하는 바'가 있지요. 그게 무엇에 근거한 판단이든, 선하든 아니든, 옳든 그르든, 민주국가에선 누구나 동일한 주권을 가지고 있습니다. 통치자 역시 마찬가지입니다. 대퉁령이 어떤 현안을 다룰 때 판단기준이 무엇이어야 합니까? '공동체에 좋은 것'이겠지요. 그런데 그 말 자체가 참으로 모호한 것입니다. '사회과학적 데이터'가 나와있어도 마찬가집니다. 현세대에 좋지만 미래세대에 좋지 않다면? 그리고 그 반대라면? 공동체에 좋지만 도덕적으로 좋지 않다면? 경제적으로 좋아도 사회적으로 좋지 않다면? 그래서 지도자는 늘 고통속에서 결정을 내리는 것입니다. 게다가 지도자의 모든 결정은 사적인 경험과 그런 경험이 바탕이 된 '직관'이 개입하게 되지요. 그래서 지도자에게 필요한 제1의 덕목은 지식이지만 정말 필요한 건 정의감과 결단력입니다.
