원조로 延命하던 시절 李承晩의 당당한 연설

李承晩 대통령은 미국을 방문하던 1954년 8월2일 韓美재단이 주최한 만찬에서 연설했다.
“내가 여기 온 것은 더 많은 원조, 더 많은 자금, 기타 무엇을 요구하려는 것이 아닙니다. 우리 민족이 難關(난관)에 처해 있는 것은 사실입니다. 그러나 우리 국민은 울면서 도움을 갈구하지 않습니다. 우리 국민은 눈물을 감추고 조용한 결의와 용감한 미소로 飢餓(기아)와 파괴를 이겨내는 싸움을 시작했습니다...나의 영혼은 미국 국민의 넘치는 厚意와 지지에 의해서 한껏 고무됐습니다. 우리가 힘을 합하면 無敵입니다. 정의라는 대의(大義)의 갑옷을 입고 신의 가호를 받고 있는 우리는 반드시 승리할 것입니다.”(이현표 前 주미한국대사관 홍보원장 번역)
전쟁으로 폐허가 된 나라, 원조를 받고 延命(연명)하던 나라의 대통령은 이렇게 당당하였다.
