 일부 美쇠고기 업체들 30개월 미만 여부 표시하겠다
 

미국의 일부 쇠고기 업체들이 한국으로 수출하는 쇠고기에 대해 도축 당시 월령을 표시하겠다고 2일 밝혔다.

타이슨 푸드와 카길 미트솔루션, JBS 스위프트, 내셔널 비프패킹, 스미스필드 비프그룹 등 미 쇠고기 업체들은 이날 발표한 공동발표문에서 수출되는 쇠고기에 라벨을 붙여 이 라벨이 도축 시점 당시 해당 소가 30개월 이상인지 여부를 보여줄 것이라고 말했다.
    
업체들은 미국산 쇠고기를 구입할지 말지를 결정하는 것은 전적으로 한국 소비자들에게 달려 있다고 덧붙였다. 이들 업체의 쇠고기 월령 표시 계획은 그러나 최대 120일 동안 한시적으로 이뤄질 것으로 알려졌다.

타이슨 푸드의 개리 미켈슨 대변인은 “우리는 한국 시장의 재개방과 한국 소비자들의 신뢰를 회복하기 위한 방법으로 일시적인 라벨링 프로그램을 자발적으로 실행할 것”이라며 업체들이 라벨을 어떻게 보이게 할 것인지, 상자 어느 부분에 부착할 지 등을 협의하고 있다고 전했다.
    
카길사의 마크 클라인 대변인은 한국 시장이 “미국산 쇠고기의 주요 수출지역 중 하나”라며 “매우 훌륭한 소비자”라고 말했다.

한국은 미국산 쇠고기 수입 위생조건 협상에서 30개월 이상을 포함한 쇠고기의 수입을 재개키로 결정했으나, 광우병 감염 가능성에 대한 우려가 확산되면서 연일 촛불시위가 벌어지는 등 수입조건 재협상을 촉구하는 목소리가 고조돼 왔다.
