美 국무부 “北 비핵화에 진지하길”
헤더 노어트 대변인 "(일본 정부가 북한의 비핵화 의지를 회의적으로 보고 있다는 지적에), 그런 점을
이해하고 있고 미국도 회담에 대해 현실적인 입장을 취하고 있다"

미국 국무부는 북한이 비핵화 의지와 관련해 진지하길 바란다고 밝혔습니다. 미국도 선의를 갖고 북한
과의 만남을 추진할 것이라고 강조했습니다. 김영남 기자가 보도합니다.
헤더 노어트 국무부 대변인은 북한이 비핵화와 관련해 진지하길 바란다고 밝혔습니다.
[녹취: 헤더 노어트 대변인] “North Korea has stated to South Korea certainly and to China that it
is committed to denuclearization. We are going to, or we are planning to go ahead with meetings
to have conversations with them about that. At this point, we will go forward with those and hope
they are serious about that.”
노어트 대변인은 29일 정례브리핑에서 북한이 말한 비핵화와 미국이 원하는 ‘완전한 비핵화’에 차이
가 없느냐는 지적에, 북한은 한국과 중국에 비핵화 의지가 있다는 점을 밝혔다며 이같이 말했습니다.
이어 미국은 이 문제와 관련한 대화를 나누기 위해 북한과 회담을 추진하고 있으며 북한이 진지하길
바란다고 밝혔습니다. 노어트 대변인은 남북 정상회담이 미국이 북한과 마주앉아 회담할 수 있는 상황
에 가까워지도록 하고 있다고 말했습니다.
[녹취: 헤더 노어트 대변인] “I think that meeting overall that was announced between the ROK
and North Korea, just moves us closer to the point where the United States can sit down with
North Korea, and have a meeting. We are realistic about that overall. The State Department is
planning for that meeting.”
이어 미국은 이 모든 것에 현실적이며 국무부는 북한과의 만남을 준비하고 있다고 말했습니다. 노어트
대변인은 특히 미국이 전폭적인 신뢰와 선의를 갖고 이를 추진할 것이라는 점을 강조했습니다.
[녹취: 헤더 노어트 대변인] “We are going ahead with full faith and good faith. We have had lots
of conversations with Republic of Korea about the contents of that meeting and contents of their
discussions.”
미국은 한국이 북한과 가진 만남과 논의 내용들에 대해 한국과 많은 대화를 나눠왔다는 설명입니다.
노어트 대변인은 또 북한에 대한 압박 캠페인이 작동하고 있다는 점을 믿는다고 말했습니다.
[녹취: 헤더 노어트 대변인] “And we believe overall that the pressure campaign is working. I have
talked about so many times up here and we are proud of that pressure campaign and so many
countries joining the United States and recognizing this destabilizing elements within North
Korean regime in terms of its ballistic missiles and nuclear testing.”
많은 나라들이 미국의 압박 캠페인에 동참하고 탄도미사일과 핵실험과 관련해 북한 정권 내부의 불안
정 요소를 인식했다는 겁니다. 노어트 대변인은 일본 정부가 북한의 비핵화 의지를 회의적으로 보고 있
다는 지적에, 그런 점을 이해하고 있고 미국도 회담에 대해 현실적인 입장을 취하고 있다고 말했습니다.
[녹취: 헤더 노어트 대변인] “I understand their skepticism. We are being realistic too about this
meeting, but it doesn’t mean that we won’t go ahead and plan a meeting to have this
conversation about denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.”
하지만 그렇다고 해서 한반도 비핵화를 위한 회담을 예정대로 진행하지 않겠다는 뜻은 아니라고 강조
했습니다.
한편 노어트 대변인은 이날 ‘CNN’ 방송과의 인터뷰에서 한국이 진행해 온 북한과의 대화가 북한 문제
와 관련해 미국이 현 상황에 이르는 데 도움이 됐다고 밝혔습니다. 노어트 대변인은 또 미국은 앞으로
열릴 회담들에 대해 한국과 꾸준히 대화를 나누고 있다며, 이런 회담들이 열리는 것을 기쁘게 생각한다
고 밝혔습니다.
그러면서 한국은 미국과, 미국은 한국과 정보들을 공유하고 있다고 말했습니다. 노어트 대변인은 이어
미-북 정상회담에 대한 일정을 아직 갖고 있지 않지만 가까운 미래에 열리기를 고대한다고 말했습니다.
이어 시진핑 중국 국가주석이 김정은 위원장과의 만남을 통해 대북 영향력을 다시 강화하려는 것 아니
냐는 물음에, 중국이 북한에 엄청난 영향력을 갖고 있다는 점은 의심의 여지가 없다고 대답했습니다. 특
히 중국은 트럼프 대통령의 대북 최대 압박 캠페인과 관련해 미국과 다른 많은 나라들에 도움이 돼 왔다
고 말했습니다.
