 北대포동 발사땐 요격”
 로버트 게이츠 美 국방장관 북한의 도발 가능성에 강력 경고

로버트 게이츠 미국 국방장관은 10일 북한의 대포동 2호 발사 징후에 대해“북한이 발사 준비를 계속한다면 미국은 북한 미사일을 요격하기 위한 태세를 갖출 것”이라고 강력 경고했다. 미국이 북한의 도발적 움직임에 대해 ´요격´이라는 표현을 사용한 것은 이번이 처음이다. 

게이츠 장관은 이날 "필요하다면 (요격 준비를) 선택할 것"이라며 "북한은 핵검증과 비핵화 협상에 긍정적인 신호를 보내는데 주력해야 한다"며 이같이 밝혔다. 

게이츠 국방장관은“국무장관과 국가안보보좌관, 대통령과 부통령 모두는 우리의 능력을 이해하고 있다”며 대북미사일 요격 가능성을 분명히 했다. 

힐러리 클린턴 국무장관도 동아시아의 모든 국가들이 북한의 위협을 용납하지 않을 것이라고 경고했다. 힐러리 장관은 이날 카렐 슈바르첸베르코 체코 외무장관과 회담한 뒤 기자회견을 갖고 "최근 북한의 행동이 동북아 지역 안정과 평화, 안보를 위협하는 행동의 전조가 아니길 기대한다"며 이같이 말했다. 

유명환 외교통상부 장관과 나카소네 히로후미(中曾根弘文) 일본 외상은 11일 서울에서 가진 한일외무장관회담에서 최근 북한의 미사일 발사 등 긴장 조성이 바람직하지 않다는 점에 인식을 같이 하고, 공동대응하기로 했다. 

한편 최근 서해 5도 인근 해상에서 중국 어선들이 모두 철수한 것이 알려지면서 북한의 도발 가능성에 대한 우려도 높아지고 있다.
