 주한미군 가족동반 근무 허용
 [조선닷컴]한국 '안전국가'로… 해외 차출땐 대체전력 투입 보장

지금까지 주한미군 장병 가운데 일부에게만 허용됐던 가족 동반 근무가 전체 주한미군 장병을 대상으로 확대 시행되고, 근무 기간도 현재의 1~2년에서 2~3년으로 연장된다. 또 주한미군 병력이 해외로 차출될 경우 대체전력 투입이 보장된다.

월터 샤프 한미연합사령관 겸 주한미군사령관은 11일 서울 용산기지 내 드래건힐 라지(Dragonhill Lodge)에서 가진 기자 간담회에서 "기반 시설물 지원이 가능해지면 서울과 평택, 오산, 대구, 진해 등에서 근무하는 주한미군 장병은 가족을 동반한 36개월 근무가 실시될 것이며, 의정부와 동두천 지역의 가족 동반 근무는 24개월이 될 것"이라고 밝혔다. 그는 "이들 기지에서 가족을 동반하지 않는 근무는 12개월이며, 핵심 주요 보직의 경우는 24개월이 될 것"이라고 덧붙였다.

이 같은 조치는 미국이 한국을 '안전한 국가'로 분류했다는 것을 의미한다. 그동안 미군이 세계적으로 실제 교전이 일어나지 않는 지역 가운데 가족을 동반하는 3년 근무를 채택하지 않고 있는 경우는 한국이 유일했다. 

이와 함께 샤프 사령관은 "향후 주한미군 숫자는 현재 수준을 유지할 것이며, 일부가 해외로 차출된다면 한국군과의 긴밀한 협의를 거쳐 대체전력을 보장한 후 이를 시행할 것"이라고 말했다.
