 브레넌 차기 CIA국장 인준 청문회서 美 드론 중요성·북한 핵위협 언급

 존 브레넌 차기 CIA 국장 지명자 &copy;AFP=News1 존 브레넌 미국 중앙정보국(CIA) 국장지명자는 7일(현지시간) 정부의 무인기(드론) 프로그램이 합법이며 국가안보에 매우 중요하다고 강조했다.

브레넌 지명자는 이날 미 상원 정보위원회와의 인준 청문회에서 "무인기 공격은 인명을 구하기 위한 마지막 수단으로만 쓰인다"고 말했다.

그는 최근 국제사회 주요 현안으로 떠오른 북한에 대해서도 한 차례 거론했다.

브레넌은 CIA가 직면한 다수의 현안을 설명하면서 이란과 북한의 핵무기 개발과 미사일 프로그램을 예로 들었다. 

이날 브레넌의 청문회는 방청객들의 시위로 한때 중단되기도 했다.

브레넌 지명자의 모두발언이 진행되는 동안 한 시위자가 일어서서 "드론에 저항하라"고 외쳤다.

또다른 시위자는 '브레넌=무인기 살인'이라고 적힌 피켓을 들고 항의하기도 했다. 한 여성은 실제 어린이 크기의 마네킹을 흔들며 "파키스탄이나 예멘의 아이들보다 당신의 아이들이 더 중요하냐"고 소리쳤다.

이같은 상황이 수차례 반복되자 다이앤 파인스타인 위원장은 휴회를 선언하고 의회 경찰에 이들을 끌어내고 다시 돌아오지 못하게 하라고 지시했다.

청문회는 5분 뒤 재개됐다.

이날 시위는 반전 단체 '코드 핑크(Code Pink)'가 벌인 것으로 알려졌다.

백악관 대테러·국토안보 보좌관으로서 미국의 무인기 작전과 특수 임무 병력 배치를 지휘해 온 브레넌은 시위자들이 잘못된 정보를 갖고 있다며 "미국은 드론으로 인한 민간인 공격을 피하기 위해 가능한 모든 노력을 하고 있다"고 강조했다.
