오늘날 미국의 리버럴리즘으로 대표되는 ‘현대 자유주의‘사상은 진보주의의 급진적 개혁조치보다는 보수주의의 방식인 점진적인 변화를 추구해왔습니다. 서구에서 리버럴리즘을 ‘우파의 비둘기파‘로 보는 이유이지요. 그래도 민주당의 영향으로 미국은 ‘큰 정부‘로 변화했고, 주정부보다 연방정부의 힘이 휠신 커졌습니다. 시민들의 권리의식도 덩달아 커졌습니다. 이에 맞취 보수주의도 바뀌고 있습니다. 탈규제가 더큰 화두가 되었고, 민영화가 주요 의제가 되었습니다. 레이건은 연금을 선택하는 개인의 권리를 침해한다며 사회보장제도의 철폐를 주장하기도 했습니다. 부시는 소수의 특정이익집단을 위한 차별시정조치와 그런 노동운동을 용인하는 단체협약, 빈곤층을 게으르게 하는 복지정책까지 폐지하려 해서 급진주의자radicalis로 불렸습니다. 지금 우리 정치판에 나도는 정책들은 거기에 비하면 과연 어떤 이념으로 불릴까요?
