 복지국가를 12년 안에 만들 수는 없다 1155
 

‘포퓰리즘’이라는 낱말이 결코 나쁜 말은 아닙니다. ‘피플’에게 인기가 있는 정책을 추진하는 일이 왜 잘못된 것이겠습니까. 링컨이 요약한대로 민주주의의 기본적 개념은, ‘국민의, 국민에 의한, 국민을 위한 정치’라고 할 때 ‘국민을 위한 정치’를 고집하는 것은 바람직한 일일 수도 있습니다.

그러나 그 ‘포퓰리즘’이 국민을 위한 것이 아니라 내용에 있어서는 오직 국민의 환심을 사서 권력을 장악하기 위한 하나의 술책에 지나지 않는다면 크게 경계해야 할 악당들의 흉계의 일부라고 볼 수밖에 없습니다.

옛날에는 철없는 아이들이 몰래 들고 나온 엄마의 금반지를 받고 엿 한 가락 또는 솜사탕 한 개를 주는 아주 나쁜 엿 장사들이 있었습니다. 요새 일만 벌리면 ‘복지, 복지’하는 자들 가운데는 옛날에나 있었던 그런 고약한 악덕 엿 장사를 연상케 하는 자들이 있는 게 사실입니다.

희랍이라는 나라는 이런 사이비 ‘포퓰리스트들’ 때문에 국가가 파산 상태에 다다랐다는 말을 듣고 요새 우리나라에서 부쩍 늘어난 이른바 비양심적인 ‘복지론자들’의 퇴치가 시급하다고 생각하게 되었습니다. 이놈들이 적화통일을 꿈꾸면서도 ‘포퓰리즘’을 들고 나온다면 가만있을 수는 없습니다. 모습을 드러내는 대로 올해 각종 선거에서 이놈들을 쇠망치로 때려 눕혀야만 합니다. 대장간에 가서 쇠망치를 하나씩 사들고 나오는 것이 민주시민의 마땅한 책임이 아니겠습니까.
