20111120일 절망뿐인가 합니다
60년대, 70년대의 지성인들의 걱정은 이 제시한 세 가지로 요약할 수 있습니다. 첫째는 인구의 폭발이었고 둘째는 천연 지하자원의 고갈, 셋째는 자연환경의 오염(공행)이었습니다. 앞으로 70억 내지 75억으로 늘어날 그 많은 사람들을 먹여 살릴 능력을 우리들이 사는 이 지구가 과연 지니고 있느냐는 질문에 “가능하다”고 대답할 수 있는 사람은 많지 않았습니다.
그리고 교통∙통신의 수단이 발전함에 따라, 부자 나라들의 잘 사는 모습을 직접 눈으로 보면서 가난한 나라들의 가난한 백성들이 분발하는 것은 좋은 일이지만 모두가 그런 높은 수준의 생활을 즐기려 하니 자원의 고갈이 불가피하게 되었습니다.
그러는 가운데 자연환경의 파괴와 오염이 또한 불가피하였습니다. 공기가 오염되어 숨쉬기가 어렵고, 물은 썩어서 마실 수 없고, 흙은 유해물질이 스며들어 농작물이 먹을 만 하지가 못할 뿐 아니라 그로 인하여 기후는 우리가 감당할 수 없이 돌변합니다.
그러나 오늘 우리들의 문제는 의 근심보다 더 심각한 것이라고 하겠습니다. 시드니 교외의 노인 홈 두 동을 불 질러 다 태워버린 간호사, 35세의 젊고 잘생긴 그 놈은 과연 제 정신입니까. 죽은 노인들, 화상 입은 노인들 그리고 그 많은 늙은이들, 그 놈 생각에는 살 필요가 없는 쓰레기라는 겁니까. 시리아의 독재자는 왜 계속 국민이 피를 흘리게 합니까. 이란은 무슨 속셈으로 무서운 핵무기만을 만드는 겁니까. 오늘의 세계를 둘러보면 절망 밖에 없습니다.
