LA타임즈의 바바라 데믹은 북한의 참혹한 생활상을 서방세계에 알려주는 자기 책의 제목을〈Nothing to Envy〉라고 하였습니다. 이 짧은 한마디는 북한 당국이 전세계를 기만하기 위하여 제작한 대형 광고판에 적혀있는 말입니다. 김정일 밑에 사는 인민은 이 세상에 부러울 것이 없는 행복한 삶을 살고 있다는 거짓선전입니다.

어떤 이가 그러한 북한의 실상을 개탄한 나머지 “김정일은 나쁜 놈, 편드는 자는 더 나쁜 놈 ”이라고 털어 놓았습니다. 대단한 독설처럼 들리지만 따지고 보면 사실 아닙니까. 이 글을 쓴 사람은, “김정일 세력의 급소는 김정일이다”라고 믿는다면서, 마치 흡혈귀 드라큐라가 ‘정의의 십자가’와 ‘진실의 햇볕’에 무서워 떨고 죽고 말듯이 만일 김정일이 나쁜 놈이라는 사실을 북한의 동포들이 알기만 하면 그 악의 세력은 즉각 먼지가 될 것이라고 그는 믿고 있었습니다.

이런 나쁜 놈을 ‘국방위원장’이라며 존대하는 것도 듣기 거북하고 그런 사악한 세력을 진보적이라고 두둔하는 것은 차마 눈 뜨고 볼 수 없는 미친 짓이 아니냐는 것입니다. 북한 사람들의 키가 지난 15년에 13cm가 줄었고 평균수명이 15년이나 감소되었고 300만이 굶어서 죽었다는데 “김정일 장군 만세!”를 떠드는 “더 나쁜놈”이 대한민국 땅에서 세끼 밥을 먹고 대낮에 종로 거리를 활보하고 있다면 그대로 두고 보기만 하겠습니까.
