 美합참의장 北 지도부는 예측 불가능 집단
 "서해가 사실상의 중국 영해라는 주장은 사실 아니다…公海인 서해에서 또 작전 펼칠 계획"

 MC: 미국은 북한 지도부가 매우 예측하기 어렵고 위험하므로 절제하면서 신중히 대응할 필요가 있다고 밝혔습니다. 박정우 기자가 보도합니다. 
 
 마이클 멀린 미국 합참의장은 북한 지도부가 매우 예측하기 어렵고 위험하다며 46명의 목숨을 앗아간 천안함 사건이 이를 잘 보여준다고 9일 밝혔습니다. 멀린 합참의장은 워싱턴 州의 루이스 기지를 방문해 근무중인 미군 장병과 한 대화에서 북한 정세와 관련한 질문에 매우 절제되고 신중한 대응이 필요하다며 이같이 답했습니다. 
 
 멀린 합참의장:북한이 정례적으로 지역의 안정을 해치고 있습니다. 미국과 한국뿐 아니라 중국, 러시아도 지역 안정에 책임이 있습니다. 
 
 그는 이어 한미 양국 군이 매우 공고한 관계를 유지하고 있다고 말했습니다. 
 
 멀린 합참의장:수심이 얕고 목표물이 작아 매우 어려운 상황에서도 한미 양국군이 동해와 서해에서 對잠수함 훈련을 수행했습니다. 앞으로 이를 계속할 필요가 있습니다. 
 
 멀린 합참의장은 미국 항공모함의 서해 훈련 참가와 관련한 중국의 반발에 대해서도 단호한 입장을 보였습니다. 
 
 멀린 합참의장:서해가 중국의 사실상의 영해라는 주장이 있지만 전혀 사실이 아닙니다. 서해는 공해입니다. 지난 10월 항공모함이 서해 작전에 참여했고 앞으로 서해에서 또 작전을 펼칠 예정입니다. 
 
 멀린 합참의장은 천안함 사건 대응을 통해 60년에 걸친 한미동맹의 공고함과 그 중요성이 증명됐다고 평가했습니다.
