오바마 대통령 아시아 태평양 주둔 美軍 사령관들에게 전화
북한의 한국 추가 공격에 대비하고 한국 정부와 협조하라..
‘한국 방위에 대한 미국의 공약 철저하게 책임 다할 것’
(워싱턴) 버락 오바마 대통령은 24일 직접 전화를 통해 하와이 미군 태평양 사령관, 주일 미군 사령관, 주한 8군 사령관에게 “북한의 한국 추가 공격에 대비, 한국 정부와 한국군 관계자들과 협의 긴밀한 전략을 유지하라”고 지시했다.
로버트 기브스 백악관 대변인은 이명박 한국 대통령이 천안함 사건에 대한 대국민 발표가 있은 즉시 오바마 대통령은 심야 성명을 통해 “전적으로 적절하며 동의한다”고 강력한 지지를 표명 했다고 밝혔다.
기브스 대변인은 “우리는 한국 대통령이 북한에 대해 즉각적인 사과와 책임자 처벌을 요구하고 특히 호전적이고 위협적인 행위를 중단하도록 촉구한 것을 지지하며 한국에 대한 미국의 방위공약은 명백하게 지켜질 것”이라고 말했다.
그는 또 “오바마 대통령은 이번 사건을 계기로 대북 정책에 대한 미군의 전략을 재점검하고 미군에 대해서도 북한의 추가 공격을 차단하고 전투태세를 확보하기 위해 한국 정부 당국과 긴밀하게 협조를 하라”고 지시했음을 밝혔다.
