 광부·간호사 파독 60주년 산업화 영웅 기억해야 한다사설

대한민국 산업화의 영웅들이 모처럼 재조명을 받았다. 윤석열 대통령은 4일 ‘파독(派獨) 근로 60주년’을 
맞아, 파독 광부·간호사·간호조무사 출신 240여 명을 서울 그랜드워커힐호텔로 초청해 기념행사를 가졌
다. “1960∼1970년대 이역만리 독일에서 약 2만 명의 광부와 간호사분이 보내온 외화를 종잣돈 삼아 대
한민국은 한강의 기적을 이뤄냈다. 여러분의 땀과 헌신이 대한민국 산업화의 밑거름이었다”고 말했다. 그 
취지대로, 파독 근로자의 국가 기여를 국민 모두 명확히 기억해야 하는 것은 당위다.

파독 근로자는 독일 현지인들이 꺼리는 험한 중노동을 탄광과 병원에서 도맡아 하며 번 돈을 고국에 보내 
가족의 생계뿐 아니라, 형제자매의 상급학교 진학도 가능하게 했다. 극한적인 환경과 타국에서의 외로움
을 견디며 피땀 흘린 이들의 삶은 오랜 세월이 흘러도, 누구든지 들을 때마다 울컥하게 한다. 당시는 대한
민국이 미국 무상 원조에 거의 전적으로 의존하는 후진국이었다. ‘조국 근대화’ 기치 아래 국가를 이끈 박
정희 대통령, 열악한 환경을 딛고 산업을 일으켜 세운 기업, 파독 광부·간호사를 포함해 국내외에서 피땀 
흘린 근로자 등이 산업화 주역이다.

산업화 바탕 위에서 민주화도 가능했다는 점에서 산업화 영웅은 더 각별할 수 있다. 윤 대통령이 “이제는 
대한민국이 파독 광부와 간호사 분들에게 감사를 드리고 모실 차례다. 국가의 이름으로 예우하고 기억할 
것”이라고 밝힌 배경이다. 그것이 1회성에 그쳐선 안 될 것임은 물론이다.
