 매일 30분 독서하면 2년 가량 더 수명연장
 매일 조금씩 독서를 하면 수명이 연장된다는 결과가 나왔다.

[박영우 기자=푸른한국닷컴]미국 예일대학교 연구팀은 12년간 50세 이상 성인 남녀 3,635명을 대상으로 연구를 진행한 결과 매일 30분의 시간만 투자해 독서를 하는 것만으로도 수명을 연장할 수 있다는 사실이 밝혀졌다.
  
이번 연구는 50세 이상의 3635명을 대상으로 조사됐으며 책을 전혀 읽지 않는 집단, 일주일에 3.5시간 정도 읽는 집단, 그 이상 책을 읽는 집단 등 세 개로 나뉘었다.
  
연구결과 하루에 30분 이상 소설을 읽는 사람들은 독서를 전혀 하지 않은 이들보다 수명이 2년 가량 더 늘었다. 
  
또 연구 기간 중 매주 3시간 반 이상 독서한 사람들은 책을 전혀 읽지 않은 성인에 비해 사망할 위험이 23% 정도 낮았다. 
  
3시간 반 이하로 책을 읽은 사람들 역시 그렇지 않은 사람에 비해 사망 위험이 17% 낮았다. 
  
특히 책 중에서도 소설을 읽을 경우 상관관계가 가장 컸다. 신문이나 잡지, 정기간행물 등 다른 책을 읽는 것도 수명 연장에 효과가 있었지만 연관관계는 소설만큼 강하지 못했다. 
  
또 직업과 나이, 인종, 건강, 우울증, 결혼 등의 다른 요인을 조정해도 독서와 수명 연장 사이의 관계는 여전히 존재하는 것으로 나타났다. 
  
다만 연구진은 "독서가 뇌 세포간 연결을 강화하는 등 인지적 능력을 향상시킨다는 것에 기인할 수 있다"라고 설명했다.
