뒤죽박죽인 오늘의 세상에서 1141
영국에서는 가뭄이 심해서 농사가 절망적이라며 농군들이 울상입니다. 남미 칠레의 화산이 뿜어내는 재 때문에 인근 부에노스 아이레스의 공항에서는 비행기가 뜨지 못한답니다. 리오데자네이로에는 폭풍이 몰아쳐 가로수가 쓰러지고 자동차가 대파되고 정전 때문에 진실로 흑암의 거리가 되었답니다.
독일 사람들이 괴질로 쓰러지고 죽어가고 야단법석이었는데 그 대장균이 스페인산 오이에서 비롯되었다는 당국의 발표가 있어 오이 생산농가들은 죽을 맛이었습니다. 그러나 알고 보니 병균은 스페인산 오이가 아니라 독일산 콩나물에 잠복해있었다는 판정이 내려졌답니다.
먹거리도 사람도 이랬다저랬다 하는데다가 땅도 하늘도 제멋대로 - 이 지구 위에 산다는 것 자체가 매우 불안한 시대에 접어든 것 같습니다. 일찍이 영국시인 매슈 아놀드가 도버해협에 서서 이렇게 탄식했습니다.
“사랑이여, 우리는 서로 진실합시다. 꿈의 땅인 듯 우리 앞에 펼쳐진 이 세계는, 그토록 다양하고, 그토록 아름답고, 그토록 새롭지만, 진정 기쁨도 애정도 빛도 없고, 확실함도, 평화도, 고통에 대한 위로도 없습니다. · · ·”
대한민국이 경제 강국이 되었다고 노래 부르고 춤을 추고 야단법석이지만 ‘진실’이 없어요. 알맹이가 없어요. 그저 겉치레, 그저 빈말! 힘이 있는 사람들은 어찌하여 힘이 없는 사람들에게 이토록 가혹하고 이토록 잔인합니까? 하늘이 무섭지 않는 것이죠.
