오는 2014년 말 서울에서 포항까지 환승없이 KTX로 이동할 수 있게 된다. 이럴 경우 소요시간은 1시간50분으로, 지금보다 무려 2시간10분이나 단축 운행된다.
국토해양부는 서울에서 포항까지 환승 없이 KTX를 타고 이동할 수 있도록 7일 오전 11시 포항역에서 경부고속철도 연결선 건설공사의 착공식을 갖는다고 밝혔다.
연결선이 개통되면 서울-포항간 소요시간은 1시간 50분으로, 현재 서울에서 KTX로 동대구로 이동해 새마을호로 갈아타는 것(4시간 소요)보다 2시간10분이 단축된다.
포항연결선은 경부고속철도와 현재 건설중인 동해남부선(울산-포항, 2014년 완공)을 잇는 노선으로, 2014년말 완공을 목표로 총공사비 1735억원을 투입해 3895m를 건설할 계획이다.
국토해양부는 포항 연결선이 완공되면 포항이 KTX 거점 정차역이 됨에 따라 포항, 영덕 등 경북지역으로 KTX 수혜지역이 확대돼 철도이용자의 편의가 대폭 증대되고, 지역발전 활성화에 크게 기여할 것으로 예상된다고 밝혔다.
