WHO “신종플루 백신 기면증 유발시킨다”

세계보건기구(이하 WHO)는 8일 신종플루(H1N1) 예방백신을 접종한 어린이와 청소년에게서 기면증(narcolepsy)으로 추정되는 증상이 나타났다는 보고가 12개국에서 접수됐다고 밝혔다.
기면증은 낮 시간에 과도하게 졸립고 잠이 들 때나 깰 때 환각, 수면 마비, 수면 발작 등의 증상을 보이는 신경정신과 질환으로, 특히 스웨덴이나 핀란드 같은 북유럽 국가에서 많이 발생하는 것으로 알려졌다.
WHO는 발표문에서 GSK(글락소 스미스클라인)이 생산하는 신종플루 백신인 ‘팬덤릭스’를 접종한 어린이의 경우 접종하지 않은 어린이에 비해 기면증에 걸릴 확률이 9배나 높다고 말했다. 이어 이번 사례는 과거 백신접종에서는 없었던 일로, 현재 소속 전문가들이 추가로 조사중에 있다고 전했다.
앞서 핀란드 국립보건복지연구소는 지난 주 4살부터 19살 사이의 어린이와 청소년들에게서 나타난 기면증이 백신 및 다른 요소들이 복합적으로 작용한 결과로 보인다는 내용의 보고서를 발표했다.
한편 기면증은 아이돌 그룹 ‘태사자’의 멤버였던 박준석이 2007년 이 질환으로 공익판정을 받아 국내에 널리 알려졌다.
