“이집트 소식 장마당 통해 北 확산”
“‘대한민국’이라고 적힌 주머니에 담긴 쌀이 버젓이 팔려”

존 에버라드(John Everard) 전 북한주재 영국대사는 “이집트 무바라크 대통령의 퇴진을 요구하는 국민의 시위 소식이 북한 장마당의 주요 화젯거리일 것”이라고 말했다.
존 에버라드 전 대사는 미국 워싱턴에 있는 한미경제연구소(KEI)에서 ‘평양의 시장(The Markets of Pyongyang)’이란 주제의 논문 발표회에서 “북한의 시장은 단순히 물건을 사고파는 장소가 아니라 제한 없이 정보가 교환되는 장소”라며 이같이 말했다고 자유아시아방송(RFA)이 4일 보도했다.
에버라드 전 대사는 2006년부터 2008년까지 북한주재 영국대사를 지낸 경험을 바탕으로 “당시 평양에는 통일시장 같은 공식적인 시장과 ‘개구리 장마당(Frog Market)’이라고 불리는 비공식적인 시장이 있었다”며 “중국과 거래하는 상인의 입을 통해 외부세계의 소식이 장마당에서 전해지곤 했다”고 설명했다.
그는 또 “시장에는 ‘대한민국’, ‘WFP(세계식량계획)’이라고 적힌 주머니에 담긴 쌀이 버젓이 팔리고 있었다”며 “국제사회가 지원한 식량이 주민에게 전달되지 못하고 있다”고 전했다.
