 美 국방부 서해 韓美 연합훈련 취소 없다
 "서해 연합훈련의 일정을 논의 중…항공모함 조지워싱턴 호가 서해 훈련에 참가할 것"

 미국 국방부는 4일 지난 10월 말 서해상에서 실시하려다 연기된 한미 해군의 연합훈련을 당초 예정대로 항공모함 조지워싱턴 호가 참여한 가운데 서해에서 실시할 계획이라고 거듭 확인했습니다. 
 
 제프 모렐 미 국방부 대변인은 이날 국방부 청사에서 열린 정례 기자회견에서 “우리는 훈련을 취소한 적이 없다.(We didn’t cancel any exercise.)”며 이같이 말했습니다. 
 
 모렐 대변인은 “현재 (한미 양국이) 서해 연합훈련의 일정을 논의 중”이라며 “훈련 날짜가 아직 정해지지 않았다”고 덧붙였습니다. 
 
 모렐 대변인은 중국의 반발을 의식해 항공모함 조지워싱턴 호가 참여키로 했던 한미 양국 해군의 10월 연합훈련이 취소됐다는 비판을 의식해서인지 몇 차례나 거듭해서 항공모함 조지워싱턴 호를 서해에 파견할 것이라고 강조했습니다. 그는 ‘믿어도 좋다(…, rest assured,…)’는 표현까지 써가며 항공모함 조지워싱턴 호가 서해 훈련에 참가할 것이라고 밝혔습니다. 
 
 모렐 대변인은 또 “훈련이 취소됐다는 개념이 과장됐다(hyperbolic)”며 “대규모 연합훈련, 특히 항공모함이 참여하는 훈련의 경우 많은 준비가 필요하고 어려움도 따른다”고 말했습니다. 
 
 앞서 월터 샤프 주한미군사령관도 지난 10월 말 워싱턴을 방문한 자리에서 한미 해군의 연합훈련이 일정상 문제로 연기됐다며 그리 멀지 않은 미래에 훈련이 실시될 것이라고 밝힌 바 있습니다.
