트럼프 “美北 회담 사진 찍기용 아냐…北 비핵화 안 하면 제재 해제 못해”

도널드 트럼프 대통령은 북한은 비핵화에 나서야 한다며 반대의 경우는 용납할 수 없다고 밝혔습니다.
한 번의 회담을 통해 합의를 이뤄내면 좋겠지만 이번 회담은 과정이 될 것이라는 입장도 거듭 시사했습
니다. 김영남 기자가 보도합니다.
트럼프 대통령은 미-북 정상회담에 매우 잘 준비돼 있다면서도 많은 준비는 필요 없다고 생각한다고
밝혔습니다.
[녹취: 트럼프 대통령] “I think I am very well prepared. I don’t think I have to prepare very much,
it is about the attitude, willingness to get things done, but I think I have been preparing for the
summit for long time as has the other side. I think they are preparing for long time also. So this
isn’t the question of the preparation, it is the question of whether or not people want it to
happen, and we will know that very quickly.”
7일 백악관에서 아베 신조 일본 총리와 만난 트럼프 대통령은 회담 준비 과정을 묻는 기자들의 질문에
이같이 답했습니다. 그러면서 이는 태도와 문제를 해결하려는 의지에 달려 있다며 자신은 오랫동안 회
담을 준비해왔고 북한도 마찬가지라고 말했습니다.
이어 중요한 건 준비가 아니라 사람들이 (회담이) 열리길 바라는 것이라며 매우 빠른 시간 안에 알 수
있을 것이라고 덧붙였습니다. 트럼프 대통령은 이번 미-북 정상회담이 사람들에게 보여주는 데 초점을
둔 사진 촬영 행사라는 일각의 주장 역시 일축했습니다.
[녹취: 트럼프 대통령] “Well I think it is going to be much more than a photo op. I think it is the
process and I have told you that many times before. I think it is not one meeting deal it would be
wonderful if it were, they have been doing this long time, there have been a lot of enemies out
there, a lot of dislike, a lot of hatred, between countries. This will not be just a photo op.”
이번 회담은 여러 차례 말했듯 과정이 될 것이고 한 번의 회담을 통해 합의를 이루면 훌륭하겠지만 그
렇지 않을 것 같다는 겁니다. 이어 이 문제는 오랫동안 이어졌고 많은 적들이 존재하고 있으며 국가들
간의 많은 증오가 있어왔다고 설명했습니다. 그러면서 이는 사진 촬영 행사가 아니라고 거듭 강조했습
니다.
트럼프 대통령은 이번 회담은 최소한 좋은 관계를 시작하는 것이고 합의를 이뤄내기 위해선 이 점이
매우 중요하다고 말했습니다.
[녹취: 트럼프 대통령] “This will be a minimum we will start with perhaps good relationship and
that is something that is very important toward deal, making deal. I would love to see it happen in
one deal, maybe they can, they have to de-nuke, if they don’t denuclearize that will not be
acceptable. We can’t take sanctions off. Sanctions are extraordinarily powerful. And I could add
a lot more but I don’t… I chose not to do that this time, but that may happen.”
한 번에 합의를 이뤄내고 싶고 그렇게 될 수도 있지만 북한은 비핵화해야 한다는 겁니다. 그러면서 북
한이 비핵화하지 않는 것은 용납할 수 없다며 그렇게 된다면 제재를 해제할 수 없다고 설명했습니다.
이어 제재는 매우 강력하고 추가로 제재를 가할 수 있었지만 지금은 가하지 않기로 결정했다고 말했습
니다. 이어 추가 제재를 가하는 일이 생길 수도 있다고 덧붙였습니다.
트럼프 대통령은 그러면서 다음주에 열릴 회담은 매우 결실 있는 만남이자 흥미로운 만남이 될 것이
라고 말했습니다.
[녹취: 트럼프 대통령] “For our meeting next week is going to be a very fruitful meeting. I think it
is going to be exciting meeting, I think we are going to get to know a lot of people that our
country never got to know. This is something that should have been handled many years ago by
other presidents. It shouldn’t have been handled now. It should have been handled years ago,
but it is being handled right now, and I am taking care of it.”
이어 미국이 과거 전혀 알게 되지 못했던 많은 사람들을 알게 될 것이라고 설명했습니다. 그러면서 이
문제는 수 년 전 다른 대통령들이 다뤘어야 할 문제이며 지금 다뤄지지 말았어야 한다고 지적했습니다.
하지만 현재 이 문제는 다뤄지고 있고 자신이 관리하고 있다고 덧붙였습니다.
한편 트럼프 대통령은 미-북 정상회담에서 김정은과 골프를 칠 계획이 있느냐는 질문에 그랬으면 좋
겠지만 그런 계획은 없다고 답했습니다.
