美 국무부차관 “北 2월8일 열병식 개최 않길 바라”
“올림픽은 선수들 것, 어떤 것도 방해하는 일 일어나선 안돼”

북한이 평창올림픽 개막 하루 전인 2월 8일 '건군절'을 기념하는 대규모 열병식을 준비하고 있는 것으
로 알려진 가운데, 스티브 골드스타인 미국 국무부 차관은 31일(현지시간) "이 열병식이 2월8일에 개최
되지 않기를 바란다. 그게 우리의 희망"이라고 밝혔다.
골드스타인 차관은 이날 브리핑에서 "한국의 희망, 즉 올림픽에 선수들을 보내기로 한 북한이 선수들
을 격려하는 데 있어 세계 모든 나라와 함께 했으면 하는 것도 나는 알고 있다"며 이같이 말했다.
그러면서 "근본적으로 올림픽은 선수들에 대한 것이고, 그 외의 어떤 것도 방해하는 일이 일어나서는
안된다"고 강조했다.
그는 이어 평창동계올림픽 보안 문제와 관련해 "한국 정부 당국은 올림픽의 전반적인 보안을 책임지고
있으며, 우리는 그들과 2년 전부터 긴밀히 협력했다"며 "안전하고 성공적인 올림픽이 될 것으로 확신한
다"고 밝혔다.
그는 "한국 당국은 2002년 월드컵, 2014년 아시안게임 등 굵직굵직한 주요 대회를 개최한 세계 수준의
전문가들"이라며 "미국 시민은 한국이 포괄적인 보안 체계를 갖추고 있다는 확신 속에 안심하고 여행할
수 있다"고 강조했다.
동석한 마이클 이바노프 차관보는 테러 등 혹 있을 수 있는 모든 만일의 사태에 대해서도 준비가 돼 있
다고 말했다.
미 정부는 이번 올림픽 기간 서울과 평창에 약 100명의 외교 보안 요원들을 파견할 계획이다. 이는 이
전 다른 올림픽에 파견했던 인원과 비슷한 규모다.(konas)
