 국무부북한 케네스 배 인도적 차원 석방해야

미국 정부는 북한에 억류된 케네스 배 씨의 석방을 거듭 촉구했다.

[미국소리방송]젠 사키 국무부 대변인은 15일 정례브리핑에서 미국 정부는 배 씨의 건강에 대해 크게 염려하고 있다며 북한 당국이 배씨에게 특별사면을 내려 인도주의적 차원에서 즉각 석방하라고 촉구했다.

 
사키 대변인은 국무부가 배 씨의 가족과 긴밀히 연락하고 있다는 점도 강조했습니다.

 
사키 대변인은 북한이 배 씨 모자의 상봉을 허락한 배경이 뭔지는 알 수 없지만 배 씨 석방이 북한이 취할 수 있는 첫 번째  조치라고 말했다.

 
미국 정부는 북한에서 미국의 이익대표부 역할을 하고 있는 스웨덴 대사관을 통해 배 씨와의 영사접견을 정기적으로 시도하고 있으며, 배 씨가 억류된 이후 지금까지 모두 8차례 스웨덴 대사관이 배씨를 면담했다.

 
앞서 북한에 억류 중인 한국계 미국인 케네스 배씨의 어머니 배명희 씨가 북한 방문 중 아들을 세 차례 만났다고 밝혔다.

 
배 씨는 14일 가족성명을 통해 평양에 체류한 5일간 아들을 세 차례 만날 수 있었고, 아들의 건강이 2개월 전보단 나아진 것 같아 마음이 놓였다고 말했다.
