 바티칸 대변인 교황 베네딕토 16세 28일 사임할 것

바티칸 대변인은 11일 “교황 베네딕토 16세(86)가 28일 사임할 것”이라고 밝혔다고 로이터 등 외신들이 보도했다.

바티칸이 밝힌 대로 베네딕토 교황이 사임한다면, 1415년 교황 그레고리오 12세가 사임한 이래 598년 만이다. 교황은 선종(사망)할 때까지 업무를 하는 것이 가톨릭의 오랜 전통이다. 

앞서 2010년 베네딕토 교황은 책 ‘세상의 빛: 교황, 교회, 그리고 시대의 징후’에서 자진 사임 의사를 내비친 적이 있다. 이 책은 독일의 가톨릭 전문 언론인인 페터 시발트가 교황과 인터뷰 형식으로 대화를 나눈 뒤 쓴 책이다. 

베네딕토 교황은 책에서 “(교황에게는) 육체적으로, 정신적으로, 그리고 영적으로 더는 교황 업무 수행이 어렵다고 느낄 경우 사임할 권리가 있다. 경우에 따라서는 의무이기도 하다”라며 “교황의 의무와 잦은 해외 출장에 자주 부담을 느끼곤 한다. 때로는 육체적인 면에서 내가 일(교황 업무)을 해낼 수 있을지 걱정되고 의문이 들기도 한다”고 털어놓았다.

1927년생인 베네딕토 교황은 2005년 4월 제265대 교황이 됐다. 교황으로 선출됐을 당시 그의 나이는 78세로, 1730년 교황 클레멘스 12세 이후 275년 동안 선출된 교황 가운데 가장 나이가 많았다.

한편 베네딕토 교황은 10일 트위터에 “우리는 신의 축복과 강력한 힘을 믿어야 한다. 우리는 모두 죄인이지만, 신의 은혜로 인해 바뀔 수 있고 새롭게 태어날 수 있다”고 말했다.
