 원정화 붙잡기까지

여간첩 원정화를 검거하기까지 수사당국은 3년 2개월의 긴 내사 과정을 거쳤다. 2005년 5월 탈북여성이 대북무역을 하고 다수의 군 장교들과 교제 중이라는 점을 수상하게 여긴 경찰과 국군기무사령부는 공조 내사를 시작했다.

원정화를 면밀히 관찰해오던 경찰과 기무사령부는 지난 7월15일 중국을 14차례 왕래하며 재중(在中) 북한 보위부의 지령에 따라 군 장교들의 인적 사항을 보고하고 군 안보 강연에서 북한을 찬양·고무한 혐의로 체포했다. 

체포 후 불안감을 표시한 원정화는 이내 자신이 단순한 간첩이 아니라 "북한 보위부의 남파 지령에 따라 위장탈북한 간첩"이라며 신분을 자백했다고 수사당국은 밝혔다. 

수사당국은 원정화가 북한·중국·남한·일본에 걸쳐 전방위적인 간첩 활동을 벌였다는 진술을 확보하고 사안이 심각하다고 판단, 7월22일 검찰·경찰·기무사령부·국정원 등 4개 기관이 참여한 합동수사본부를 가동시켰다. 이후 한 꺼풀씩 벗겨진 원정화의 성(性)을 매개로 한 간첩행위는 수사팀을 놀라게 했다고 한다. 

그러나 객관적으로 입증된 증거보다는 원정화의 진술에 의존하고 있기 때문에 향후 상당한 확인 작업을 거쳐야 한다고 수사팀은 밝혔다. 또 대남공작기관 고위 간부 출신인 원정화의 계부 김모(63·구속)씨에 대해서도 아직 밝혀지지 않은 부분이 많다. 

한편, 수사당국이 원정화의 혐의를 포착한 후 3년이 넘어서야 검거했기 때문에 "지난 정권에서 사건을 터뜨리지 못하다가 정권 교체 후 뒤늦게 발표한 것 아니냐"는 지적도 나오고 있다. 이에 대해 수사당국은 "전임 정부의 눈치를 본 건 아니지만 내사 시간이 좀 길었던 건 사실"이라고 밝혔다.
